Creeptober 2020 Writing Challenge Day 21: Echo

“Echo”

I’m not sure why they built a walking path inside this tunnel. I can’t see any reason as to why any sane person would feel the need to walk up and down a tunnel where cars are typically in motion at high speed.

That includes me. I have no clue what I’m doing here, but I continue to walk. The tunnel is eerily quiet tonight, leaving me alone with just my thoughts. I can’t remember what exactly led me down this path, but I know escaping my mind was a factor. The tunnel has that eerie yellow glow, bathing everything in its light, creating its own sepia-toned universe.

“I want out!” I say.

I WANT OUT

OUT

OUT

Echoes back at me. I haven’t spoken to another soul in months and there’s a strange comfort in hearing my voice reverberate off the walls. I look ahead for signs of the exit but the tunnel just seems to go on and on. I speak more. It turns out after a long period of silence, I have a lot to say.

The tunnel winds and with each step I can see it expanding in front of me. Still no cars. Just me, the was, the glow, and my thoughts said aloud. I ask questions that only I can answer. Maybe this is the answer. This is my destination. This is my escape. Maybe solitude isn’t the worst fate.

And then the echoes spoke back.
